Prevalence of occult chronic kidney disease in diabetic and hypertensive patients in rural settings

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of occult chronic kidney disease (OCKD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and hypertension (HTN) in a rural area of the Province of Chimborazo, Ecuador. Method: 197 patients were included in a cross-sectional study (January-June 2026). The eFG (CKD-EPI) and the albuminuria/creatinine ratio (ACR) in urine were quantified; stratified sampling was adopted and the analyses were descriptive and bivariate. Results: 23.35 % had ACR ≥30 mg/g or eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m²; oCKD was more frequent in DM2+HTN, and was associated with smoking, increased abdominal circumference, and poorer blood pressure control. Conclusion: Combined screening identifies cases of CKD; the intervention on smoking, weight, and blood pressure is consistent with the factors found.
