Pressure ulcers are a preventable adverse event that affects critical patient safety and the quality of care in ICUs. Objective: To interpret the factors that contribute to the development of pressure ulcers in bedridden patients in intensive care units. Method: Qualitative and documentary review of articles published since 2017, selected from Google Scholar, Scielo, PubMed, Plos One, and Scopus, applying criteria of quality and relevance. Results: Intrinsic factors such as advanced age, altered mental status, malnutrition, incontinence, comorbidities, and inadequate perfusion were identified, as well as extrinsic factors such as friction, shearing, moisture, prolonged immobility, invasive devices, and limitations in nursing knowledge and practice. The Braden, Norton, and Waterlow scales showed variable usefulness in predicting risk in the ICU. Conclusions: Prevention depends on nursing knowledge, systematic risk assessment, and the timely application of measures that reduce pressure and protect skin integrity
