Application of the accelerated recovery protocol after surgery. A literature review

Introduction: The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol improves surgical outcomes and speeds up patient recovery, based on a multidisciplinary approach. Objective: To conduct a literature review on the application of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocol. Methods: Systematic review and meta-analysis of existing literature in the Scielo Scopus, Sciencedirect, Elsevier, and Dialnet databases. Results: Significant evidence of critical aspects that nursing staff should apply during patient care. Conclusions: The reviews of the articles establish that the ERAS protocol after surgery can accelerate rehabilitation, decrease complications, reduce hospitalization costs, and increase patient satisfaction. The implementation of the ERAS protocol must be multidisciplinary because it requires the collaboration of the staff involved in a surgical procedure.
