Abstract

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To analyze complications associated with carbon dioxide use during laparoscopic cholecystectomy through bibliographic review to identify incidence, risk factors and preventive measures. Method: A systematic literature review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases during March-July 2023. Studies demonstrating CO2-related complications during laparoscopic cholecystectomy, published between 2018-2023, were included. Results: Complications identified included postoperative abdominal and shoulder pain, embolisms with 28-30% mortality, subcutaneous emphysema and sinus bradycardia with cardiac arrest risk. CO2 embolism presents 0.15% incidence but high lethality. Conclusions: Complications associated with CO2 in laparoscopic cholecystectomy require early identification of risk factors and multidisciplinary surgical team work to ensure patient safety.
