Postoperative complications associated with perioperative hypothermia: systematic review

Objectives: To determine postoperative complications associated with perioperative hypothermia through literature review. Method: Non-experimental qualitative study with bibliographic review in Scielo, Elsevier, ProQuest, Dialnet, PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Twenty publications from 2019-2023 that met inclusion criteria were analyzed. Results: Multiple complications were identified: surgical site infections, hemorrhages, coagulation disorders, delayed healing, shivering, cardiovascular disorders, pressure ulcers, longer hospital stay and high costs. The incidence of perioperative hypothermia ranged from 31,71% to 93,1%, being higher in geriatric patients. Conclusions: Perioperative hypothermia represents a significant risk factor for postoperative complications that compromise patient safety and requires implementation of standardized monitoring and prevention protocols.
