Abstract

Objective: To determine the effectiveness of vancomycin in preventing postoperative infections in spinal surgery patients. Method: Bibliographic review in scientific databases such as Science Direct, PubMed and Google Scholar of articles published in the last 5 years, following the PRISMA protocol. Results: The initial search returned 200 articles, selecting 20 after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. Half of the articles demonstrate vancomycin efficacy in preventing postoperative infections in spinal surgery, while in the remaining articles the evidence is not statistically significant. Conclusions: The application of intraoperative vancomycin as prophylaxis contributes to significant reduction of surgical site infection risk after instrumented spinal surgeries. Its administration presents advantages such as antimicrobial efficacy, fewer side effects, economic profitability and ease of use.
