Abstract

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To describe the risks to healthcare personnel exposed to ionizing radiation during neurological and trauma surgeries to propose a guide for updating safety measures in the use of lead protective garments. Method: Qualitative, descriptive, exploratory, and cross-sectional research through documentary bibliographic review of scientific articles published between 2019-2023, indexed in PubMed and Science Direct, using the PRISMA methodology. Results: 18 articles were analyzed showing significant risks to eyes, thyroid, hands, and gonads. Occupational exposure increases the risk of cataracts, thyroid alterations, skin lesions, and reproductive effects. Knowledge about radiological protection principles is limited and appropriate use of lead protection equipment is deficient. Conclusions: Real risks exist for medical teams exposed to ionizing radiation during surgical procedures. Radiological protection through appropriate use of shielded equipment significantly reduces associated risks.
