Abstract

Objective: To evaluate pain scales in patients with invasive mechanical ventilation. Method: Descriptive documentary. Results and Conclusion: The pain assessment scales CPOT and BPS have a higher percentage of validity and reliability for patients under mechanical ventilation, while for patients with dementia the PAINAD scale has greater scientific support. The other scales such as PAINAD, NVPS, among others, were considered not so reliable because they have 5 or more elements, such as; breathing, negative vocalization, facial expression, body language and capacity for relief, making it difficult to be applied in some patients, since the limitation of this scale is that it cannot be used in other populations due to the interpretation errors that it could cause.
