Objective: to determine the main risk factors for the development of delirium in patients in an intensive care unit. Method: Descriptive documentary. Results and Conclusion: Of all the factors that generate delirium in ICU patients, the use of pharmacological measures such as benzodiazepines, opioids, vasopressors, together with comorbidities are the main risk factors for this condition. However, these factors cannot be generalized to all types of patients. The risk factors for delirium must be diagnosed and analyzed in a timely manner to prevent its appearance and aggravation, since prolonged suffering has serious repercussions for the individual (morbidity and mortality) and for the organization (longer hospital stay, readmissions, specialized care, higher costs).
