Objective: To determine the presence of lumbago due to physical load in the personnel in charge of manual handling of patients in the surgical center of the Hospital IESS Latacunga - Ecuador. Method: Descriptive observational study. Results: In relation to the personnel who have presented discomfort in the dorsal or lumbar region, 13.6 % have presented discomfort in a period of less than 1 year, 36.4 % have presented discomfort in a period of 1 to 5 years, while 50 % have presented discomfort in a period of 6 to 10 years. Conclusions: When considering the anatomical areas most affected, such as the lumbar, cervical and shoulder regions, it is unavoidable to consider the use of auxiliary tools for the mobilization and transfer of patients, as well as the implementation of ergonomic corrections in order to minimize the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and reduce work absenteeism due to this cause.
