Abstract

The purpose of this study was to interpret the development of mathematic reasoning skills based on variational thinking in elementary school in order to generate a theoretical construct. Methodologically, a qualitative approach was taken using the phenomenological method, employing semi structured interviews as a technique and an open-ended questionnaire as an instrument. Five key informants were selected to respond to the questionnaire. Among the results, ongoing teacher training based on teaching strategies for the development of mathematical reasoning skills in children, including play, was considered beneficial. In conclusion, the informants stated that the teaching approach has focused on student learning through the promotion of autonomy in solving mathematical problems.
